Our Story

How it all started...

Let's journey back in time to the roots of McKenzie Church of Christ's rich history. In 1880, our first congregation was born, erecting a meeting house that still stands proudly today on its original site, now home to the McKenzie Steam Laundry. After the disbandment of this early congregation, McKenzie remained without a church until 1929.

In April of that pivotal year, a group of devoted brothers and sisters, including J.L. Wilson, W.E. Harris, and others, gathered with Alonzo Williams from the church in Martin to lay the foundation for a new congregation in McKenzie. With the support of additional members, they held their inaugural service in the old theater (Masonic Building). Despite facing challenges, the church persevered, with various preachers sharing the gospel during those formative years.

Expanding the vision...

In 1939, the McKenzie congregation acquired the property of the Christian church, making necessary repairs and expansions to accommodate its growing membership. By 1942, the congregation flourished with 160 members, reaching 220 just nine years later. In 1948, plans were set in motion for a larger building, made possible by the consolidation of neighboring congregations.

The 1960s brought further growth and expansion, with the elders acquiring new lots on North Highland Drive and envisioning a spacious new building with ample parking. This vision became reality on June 13, 1965, marking a new chapter in our congregation's journey.
